“I don’t know what goes through people’s minds when they make decisions like that,” Thompson commented. “I don’t know if he understood the assignment or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way.”
Instead of staying on stage, Wallen embraced that night’s host, Mikey Madison, before making a swift exit. Shortly after, he posted an image of himself on a plane with the caption, “Get me to God’s Country,” sparking speculation among fans.

For SNL, the closing moments of each episode are almost ritualistic. Hosts and musical guests typically remain on stage, exchanging hugs and congratulatory remarks. Thompson acknowledged that Wallen’s quick departure was unusual.
“We’re used to everybody turning around and high-fiving us, saying, ‘Good job, good job, good job.’ When there’s a departure from that, it makes you wonder what’s going on,” he said.
Wallen’s history with SNL has already been somewhat rocky. In 2020, he was originally slated to perform but had his appearance canceled after being seen partying maskless during the pandemic. He later made it onto the show in December 2020, even participating in a skit poking fun at the controversy.

“The ‘God’s country’ thing is strange,” Thompson remarked. “What are you trying to say? That we’re not in God’s country? That we’re not all under the same umbrella? It’s not necessarily my favorite.”
